Web Copy - Great Content is Key

If you're trying to write your own web copy, there are a couple of things you should think about before beginning. If you've already created copy for your site, take a closer look at it and ask yourself these questions.

  1. Does it look like an advertisement?
  2. Does it stop and hold your reader's attention?
  3. Can you collect e-mail addresses from your visitors?

Most people are turned off by blatant advertising. You want your copy to sell through suggestion and persuasion, not blatant advertising. Here are a couple of tips to help you get the right tone.

  1. Strategically place testimonials throughout your copy - let your past clients sell the product for you.
  2. Don't use jargon or techy-speak - if your clients can't understand you they'll leave in the blink of an eye. Nobody likes to feel stupid.
  3. Don't be too verbose or use big, fancy words. Again, feeling stupid isn't fun.
  4. Use a conversational tone - talk as you would in real life. Use colloquialisms and contractions.
  5. And don't brag - there's nothing more unattractive than unnecessary arrogance.
Remember, we're all good at something and not everyone can write. Don't be afraid to ask for help. You might have the most beautiful design in the world, but if your copy is weak you might be losing valuable clientele everyday.  Seek the advice of a professional copywriter or freelance writer, and turn that copy from drab to fab.
